Kathy has the passion, the patience, the knowledge, the experience, and the skill to individualize her teaching to each student's needs, whether they are very young beginners, teenagers, adults (you're never too old to learn!), gifted students, students with ADD, slightly autistic students, intermediate or advanced students learning classical repertoire or other genres.
Kathy's goal is to enrich every student's life with the joy of music. The youngest students will delight in taking it step by step, learning fun songs and playing along with downloaded audio. Youth will learn at a faster pace, while teenagers and adults will be able to play chords and melodies in no time! More advanced students will be able to pour their heart and soul into great repertoire!
Kathy teaches with a holistic approach, integrating various aspects of music into each lesson. Musical expression is the ultimate goal, but achieving that goal takes learning and work on good technique, music theory, ear training, sight-reading, music history, improvisation, and practicing a wide variety of music. Students are also taught how to practice and how to prepare for a performance.
Kathy was classically trained, but she guides each person according to their own interests. Pop, jazz, movie themes, religious music, children's songs, holiday music, ragtime, ethnic music, marches, patriotic music, etc. are colorful additions to basic learning.
Kathy's teaching includes ensemble work (duets, trios, etc.). This adds a new dimension that improves skills; fosters creative, cooperative, and productive relationships; and is a lot of fun!
Students interested in Composition can also learn some very basic compositional techniques during their piano lessons.
